Sheikh Sindayigaya Mussa has been elected as the new Mufti of Rwanda.
He succeeds Sheikh Salim Hitimana, who led the Rwanda Muslim Community (RMC) for the past eight years.
The election took place on Sunday, May 26, 2024.
The election of Sheikh Mussa marks a new chapter for the RMC, coming at a crucial time as the community continues to rebuild and strengthen after the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The elections were initially scheduled for 2020 but were postponed due to the global health crisis, which impacted the entire world, including Rwanda.
Sheikh Mussa, who has been a prominent figure within the Rwandan Muslim community, is expected to bring a fresh perspective and renewed energy to the leadership.
His election reflects the community’s desire for continuity and progress in promoting Islamic values and fostering unity among Rwandan Muslims.
During Sheikh Salim Hitimana’s tenure, the RMC experienced significant growth and development.
His leadership was marked by efforts to enhance religious education, promote interfaith dialogue, and engage in various social welfare activities.
Sheikh Hitimana’s period in office also saw the RMC strengthen its ties with other religious and civil organizations, contributing to the broader social cohesion in Rwanda.
The newly elected Mufti, Sheikh Mussa, has outlined a vision that includes advancing these initiatives while also addressing contemporary challenges faced by the Muslim community.
Key areas of focus will include increasing educational opportunities, particularly in Islamic studies, expanding healthcare and social services, and continuing to foster interfaith harmony.
In his acceptance speech, Sheikh Mussa emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration within the Muslim community and with other religious groups. “I am honored and humbled by the trust placed in me to lead our community. Together, we will work towards a future that is inclusive, progressive, and reflective of our core values,” he said.
The election was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner, reflecting the democratic principles upheld by the RMC.
The process involved representatives from various regions of Rwanda, ensuring a broad and inclusive participation.
The outcome has been widely accepted by community members and leaders, who expressed optimism about the future under Sheikh Mussa’s leadership.
The RMC plays a vital role in Rwandan society, not only as a religious organization but also as a contributor to social development and national unity.
Under Sheikh Mussa’s leadership, the RMC is expected to continue its mission of promoting peace, education, and social welfare.
This leadership transition comes at a time when Rwanda is also focusing on broader national goals of development and reconciliation.
The RMC’s initiatives align with these national objectives, emphasizing the importance of community-led development and interfaith cooperation.
As Sheikh Mussa takes on his new role, the Muslim community in Rwanda looks forward to a period of sustained growth and enhanced community engagement.
His leadership is anticipated to bring renewed vigor to the RMC’s efforts in contributing to the socio-economic and spiritual upliftment of Rwandan Muslims and the broader Rwandan society.
