President Kagame Dissolves Parliament

President Paul Kagame on Friday disolved the lower house of parliament to pave way for the July Presidential and parliamentary elections.

“Dissolving the parliament does not mean that we do not appreciate your work, rather, we are doing this to pave away for the new good things ahead,” said President Kagame upon dissolution of the parliament today.

“Let us hope that most, if not all of you will return here after elections.”

The Rwandan leader also presided over the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed government officials at the Parliamentary building.

He told the newly appointed officials, “Your main duty as leaders is to serve the interest of all Rwandans, without exception.”

“Leading also includes setting an example for others to follow, starting with those you lead, especially young people. How do they grow up? What are they focused on? How do they understand our way of working and how can it improve?,” President Kagame added.

Subject to provisions of article 133 of the constitution, the President may dissolve the Chamber of Deputies after consultation with the Prime Minister, the President and Speaker of the two Chambers of Parliament and the President of the Supreme Court.
