Muslim faithfuls across the globe are celebrating the holy Eid al-Adha the Festival of Sacrifice.
It is a national holiday in many countries including Rwanda.
The day marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage and commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.
The event honours Ibrahim’s devotion and readiness to sacrifice. The tradition of Qurbani or animal sacrifice, during Eud al-Adha embodies this sentiment.
The meat is shared with family, friends, and the less fortunate, highlighting the significance of distributing blessings and showing kindness. Consequently, Eid al-Adha is also refered to as Bakra Eid, in reference to the act of sacrifice.
