Rwanda Electoral Commission Announces Final Candidate List for 2024 Elections

President Paul Kagame, nominated by the RPF Inkotanyi party, headlines the list of candidates for the presidency in Rwanda’s upcoming 2024 elections, announced by the Electoral Commission on Friday, June 14, 2024.

His candidacy underscores his pivotal role in Rwandan politics since assuming office in 2000.

Dr. Frank Habineza, representing the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, also stands prominently among the contenders, accompanied by 50 parliamentary candidates from his party.

Their presence highlights a diverse field of candidates vying for Rwanda’s highest office, each bringing distinct platforms and visions for the nation’s future.

The RPF Inkotanyi, founded in 1987, has remained a dominant force in Rwandan politics, advocating for national unity, reconciliation, and sustainable development.

Under Kagame’s leadership, the party has spearheaded initiatives such as Vision 2020 and Vision 2050, aimed at propelling Rwanda towards middle-income status and fostering innovation and investment.

In addition to presidential candidates Kagame and Habineza, independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana rounds out the list of contenders, ensuring a competitive electoral landscape.

The Electoral Commission also confirmed the candidacy of Janvier Nsengiyumva as an independent candidate for Member of Parliament, alongside an expanded slate from the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda.

Originally holding nine parliamentary seats, Democratic Green Party of Rwanda now presents 50 candidates, including 24 women and 26 men, underscoring Rwanda’s commitment to gender equality in political representation.

With the official campaign period commencing on June 22, 2024, Rwanda enters a pivotal phase in its democratic process. Citizens across the nation will engage with candidates and their platforms, shaping the discourse on Rwanda’s future trajectory and addressing key issues facing the country.

The elections are scheduled for July 15, 2024, marking a crucial moment for Rwandan democracy. Notably, several candidates were eliminated from contention due to failure to meet the Electoral Commission’s eligibility criteria.

The upcoming elections are poised to be a defining moment in Rwanda’s democratic evolution, offering voters the opportunity to participate actively in determining the nation’s leadership and direction.

As the campaign unfolds, Rwandans will weigh the candidates’ proposals and visions, ultimately shaping the course of governance and development for years to come.
