France’s largest oil company, TotalEnergies, has announced the discovery of new hydrocarbon reserves in the Republic of Congo, marking a significant development for the country’s energy sector and regional oil markets.

The discovery was made as part of an ongoing drilling campaign to expand the Moho deep offshore field, located approximately 80 kilometers off the coast of Pointe-Noire.

According to the company, drilling operations identified a 160-meter column of hydrocarbons, with combined findings from recent Moho G and Moho H discoveries estimated to exceed 100 million barrels of recoverable resources.

The development is expected to strengthen Congo’s position as an emerging oil producer while reinforcing investor interest in Central Africa’s offshore energy potential.

The Moho field is operated by TotalEnergies through its subsidiary TotalEnergies E&P Congo, in partnership with several stakeholders, including QatarEnergy, which holds a 15% stake, as well as Trident Energy and the Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo.

QatarEnergy welcomed the discovery, noting it would further expand its international portfolio. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners and the Congolese government to develop the newly identified resources.

The Moho deep offshore field currently produces around 90,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, supported by two floating production units.

Plans are underway to integrate the newly discovered reserves into existing infrastructure, allowing for faster and more cost-effective development.

“This discovery benefits from its proximity to existing production infrastructure, enabling a short-cycle, efficient tie-back development,” said Nicola Mavilla, Senior Vice-President Exploration at TotalEnergies.

The new find comes at a time when global energy companies are increasingly turning to Africa for new exploration opportunities, positioning the Republic of Congo as a key player in the region’s evolving energy landscape.
