Ghanaian Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia believes his country and other African countries can take a leaf from Rwanda and Mauritius, local media reported. He said the countries have good economic practices to copy, saying they were on the right development path and can be Africa’s model economies.
Dr. Bawumia said that the economies of the two African nations have grown in leaps and bounds over the past years.
“Rwanda and Mauritius are countries that Ghana can emulate from in strengthening the economy of Ghana,” said Dr. Bawumia.
The Ghanaian leader according to Ghana’s Citifmonline.com [Citi 97.3FM Accra] attributed Rwanda’s success story in economic transformation to efficient management and best practices.
Dr. Bawumia made the remarks at a summit hosted by the African Leadership University (ALU) in Mauritius. The summit was one of the activities that marked the 49th independence anniversary for the Island where Dr. Bawumia was the Chief Guest.
Like Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, Ghanaian Vice President advocates for Africa’s independence from foreign aid and handouts. He said Africa could end the begging syndrome through massive investment and cooperation.
“Africans will only get the respect of the rest of the world if we emancipate ourselves economically. We don’t have to take begging bowls around the world. We should look for investment, cooperation and partnerships,” said Dr. Bawumia.
Dr. Bawumia and Mauritius President Mrs. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim held meetings that centred on bilateral cooperation between the two African countries.
Mauritius gained her independence from Britain on March 12, 1968 and declared a Republic on March 12, 1992.
