From Rwanda to Leicester: Former Goalkeeper Ndanda Opens Up on His New Life Coaching Kids in the UK Former Rwanda international goalkeeper Nizeyimana Alphonse "Ndanda" has embraced a completely new chapter of life, trading the pressure of packed football stadiums for the joy of developing young talent in Leicester, United Kingdom. Once known for his commanding presence between the posts for clubs including Rayon Sports, Mukura VS, AS Kigali, and Espérance FC, Ndanda is now dedicating his time to nurturing the next generation of footballers as a youth coach. In an exclusive one-on-one conversation, the former goalkeeper reflected on how life has changed since hanging up his gloves. "Football will always be part of who I am," Ndanda said. "I may have stopped playing professionally, but I haven't left the game. Coaching children gives me a different kind of happiness because you're helping shape not only footballers but also good human beings." Ndanda retired from professional football after persistent knee injuries made it impossible to continue competing at the highest level. While many wondered what his next move would be, he quietly began building a new life abroad. Today, he works with young players in Leicester, where he is passing on the experience he gained during a career that saw him represent some of Rwanda's biggest clubs. 'Life in the UK Isn't as Easy as People Think' Despite the opportunities that come with living overseas, Ndanda says the reality is often misunderstood. "Many people back home think life in the UK is easy, but that's not the case. You have to work hard every single day. Nothing comes for free here, and you have to earn everything through discipline and commitment." Rather than being discouraged by the daily challenges, Ndanda says they have become his greatest source of motivation. "The hustle itself motivates me. Every day is another chance to improve, provide for my family, and become a better version of myself. That's the mindset I live by." A Fresh Style, Same Passion Away from the football pitch, friends have also noticed a different side of Ndanda. The former goalkeeper has adopted a modern, confident style that reflects the fresh chapter he is living. He says the change isn't about fashion alone but about personal growth. "Life changes you. You grow, you experience new cultures, and you learn to express yourself differently. What's important is staying true to yourself while embracing new opportunities." Building the Future Through Football Although his playing days are over, Ndanda believes his greatest contribution to football could still lie ahead. Working with children has strengthened his belief that proper guidance at a young age can transform lives. "Seeing a child improve because of something you've taught them is priceless. My dream is to keep helping young players develop confidence, discipline, and love for the game." From lifting trophies in Rwanda to mentoring aspiring footballers in Leicester, Ndanda's journey is proof that while careers may change direction, passion never fades. His message is simple: success is built through hard work, resilience, and the willingness to keep moving forward, no matter where life takes you.
