An earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale hit on Monday Papua New Guinea in the southwestern Pacific and the world’s third largest island country.
The epicenter of the earthquake occurred 55 km from Lae city, at a depth of 94.5 km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
There were no reports of casualties or material damage.

Papua New Guinea with a population of 9.949 million is located in the so-called Ring of Fire, a region that extends along the coast of the Pacific Ocean and is characterized by high seismic and volcanic activity.
This region includes 90 percent of the active volcanoes in the world.
