Amahoro Stadium in Remera is under heightened security as numerous personnel ensured the safety of attendees for its grand reopening, to be officiated by President Paul Kagame.
The event will mark a significant milestone in Kagame’s ongoing campaign to lead Rwanda.
The stadium, now known as Amahoro Stadium, commenced its renovations in August 2022 and has been under construction for the past two years.
Originally built in March 1984 and completed in 1989 for US$21 million, the stadium was constructed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and was given a lifespan of 50 years before requiring refurbishment.
A resident, who was present at the original inauguration and recently passed away, had told Taarifa Rwanda that the Rwandan government’s decision to renovate the stadium was commendable since it was nearing the end of its intended lifespan.
The Turkish company SUMMA won the contract for the renovation for US$165 million. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has praised Amahoro Stadium as one of the finest stadiums in Africa.
Before its renovation, Amahoro Stadium had a capacity of 35,000 spectators. It has now been expanded to accommodate 45,000 people, adding 10,000 additional seats.
Beyond its increased capacity, the stadium boasts advanced technology and features several buildings that can be used for various purposes, ensuring its versatility and modernity.
