Egypt to Host Historic Inaugural IFAF African Flag Football Championships in June 2025

Egypt will host the inaugural IFAF African Flag Football Championships, set to take place from June 20 to 21, 2025, in Cairo.

The tournament, known as AFRICA FLAG 2025, will feature top men’s and women’s national teams from across the continent and serve as a qualifier for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

It is also a key milestone on the road to flag football’s debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The event will be held in partnership with the NFL and the Egyptian Federation of American Football (EFAF).

For the first time, the NFL Africa program will expand to Egypt, hosting a series of youth development events, including an NFL Flag Continental Championship for U12 teams from Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria.

NFL stars Bobby Okereke, Brian Asamoah II, and Dieter Eiselen will join the activities, mentoring young athletes and supporting football operations.

Talent identification camps will also give players a chance to join elite programs like the NFL Academy in the UK or the NFL’s International Player Pathway.

Egypt was selected as host amid growing interest in flag football across Africa. Participation in Egypt has increased by 149 percent since 2023, while Nigeria has seen an 85 percent rise.

Cameroon made history in 2024 as the first African nation to compete at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

IFAF and the NFL are working closely to support the sport’s growth on the continent, including training coaches and officials.

A recent clinic in Ghana welcomed participants from 10 countries and highlighted Africa’s growing footprint in the sport.

Organisers say AFRICA FLAG 2025 will spotlight African talent and inspire more young people to pick up the sport, with the Olympic dream now in sight.
