Kagame Addresses Critics and Vows Continued Progress Ahead of July Elections

President Paul Kagame addressed journalists in a press conference following his final rally on Saturday afternoon, where he outlined his priorities and responded to ongoing criticisms. The press conference comes ahead of the general elections scheduled for Monday, July 2024.

Kagame emphasized the importance of continuing Rwanda’s progress in security, stability, and socio-economic development. “Priority number one, after we’ve gone through all these [elections], is to continue to make as much progress as we can in the area of security and stability of our country, socio-economic development and progress, and continuing to see the country really growing in all aspects of development. So, it’s just the same path we have been on, rebuilding our country, growing it towards prosperity,” he stated.

Earlier, addressing a crowd of about 500,000 supporters in Kicukiro District, Kagame remarked on the genuine enthusiasm and unity among Rwandans. “You can’t fake unity, you can’t fake excitement, you can’t fake a turn-up like this one, you can’t. You can’t fake progress, you can’t fake anything, you can’t even fake being RPF,” he said.

Kagame is expected to win against his two opponents, Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana. He will be ending his current 7-year term and, once elected, will begin a 5-year term according to the new constitution. Kagame will still have one more opportunity to run for president.

During the press conference, Kagame addressed questions about his tenure and the calls for him to step down. “I had been here six years, I think, doing other things for my country. I accepted to be president. Now, from that time, it’s like I committed an offense, accepting to be president. Every day I’m being asked, when are you leaving? When are you going? These people who made me president are telling me they still want me to be president. Somebody else somewhere says, no, no, no, you are here too long. But these guys who even ask these questions, who tell me that even if they wanted, they cannot be the president of Rwanda because they don’t belong here. And the people of this country, who matter to me more than anybody, anywhere else, keep saying, we want you here,” Kagame explained.

Kagame also mentioned his consistent reminders to Rwandans to work towards identifying future leaders.

“Every day I remind them now, but I think for them, they are operating like, as long as he has some breath in him, let’s squeeze every bit of it. And I’ve been telling them, no, I don’t have to stay here doing, so, but I know for sure somebody will be found sooner than later if you don’t count the many years I’ve been around going forward,” he added.

The president also addressed the situation in Congo, criticizing the narrative that blames Rwanda for the problems in Eastern Congo. “A narrative has been created, now you see Rwanda is involved in Congo, even there are experts, I’m sure you have seen this group of experts’ report. I don’t know what expertise they have but they write about Rwanda’s forces, RDF in Eastern DRC then they are very silent on the government of Congo associating with FDLR and creating it and arming it and growing it to be a bigger force, they are very silent on that, that is how far their expertise go,” Kagame said.

He continued, “So, the narrative is formed to make it sound like Eastern Congo’s problem is actually created by Rwanda. But from these facts, I am telling you, that can be cross-checked as to their veracity, will show you a different story. And again, the narrative has been about turning a perpetrator into a victim and this goes very well and leads to the genocide story and the story of Rwanda and it is not just the region, it goes way beyond.”

President Kagame has been endorsed as a candidate by eight political parties. However, these parties will field their own candidates for parliamentary seats, competing against Kagame’s RPF.

Kagame’s remarks highlight his commitment to Rwanda’s continued development and stability while addressing both domestic and international criticisms.

As the country moves towards its upcoming elections, Kagame’s message resonates with many Rwandans who have witnessed the nation’s transformation over the years.
