Before anyone thinks of Presidential ambitions in Burundi, they must have at least Fbu100million (U$34,922) to deposit and then proceed to declare their candidacy.
The national assembly on Tuesday April 9, passed a resolution in its amendment to the electoral law during a fully packed session.
“To limit fanciful candidacy declarations for the elections, a deposit of two hundred thousand is established for the candidacy for the position of Municipal Councilors, two million for the Senators and Deputies candidates and one hundred million for the President candidate,” the national assembly announced.
The statement said that the coalitions of the parties shall be formed after the calling of the elections for which they wish to become candidates.
“To facilitate the operations of counting the results, the duration of the poll is one day and open from 6:00 a.m. to close at 3:00 p.m.,” reads part of the statement.
The National Assembly added that the main innovations made include; except for the presidential mandate (7 years), the other mandates remain 5 years; “The electoral campaign opens on the 16th day preceding the poll and closes 48 hours before the poll, i.e. it lasts 2 weeks.”
