The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has imposed sanctions on GVA Rwanda Ltd, the company behind Canalbox internet services in Rwanda, citing non-compliance with national regulations governing the information and communication technology sector.

In a statement, the regulator said the decision was taken in accordance with Law No. 24/2016 governing Information and Communication Technology, specifically Article 269, which outlines penalties for operators that fail to meet regulatory obligations.

As part of the sanctions, GVA Rwanda Ltd has been directed to compensate all customers affected by service disruptions reported between April 13 and April 20, 2026.

The move follows complaints from subscribers who experienced interruptions during the specified period.

RURA further warned that the company will face daily financial penalties until it fully complies with all regulatory requirements.

The authority emphasized that the measures are intended to enforce accountability and ensure that service providers maintain reliable and consistent standards.

The regulator reiterated its commitment to protecting consumer rights and maintaining quality service delivery in Rwanda’s rapidly growing ICT sector.

It also urged all licensed operators to adhere strictly to established rules to avoid similar penalties.

The action against GVA Rwanda Ltd underscores increasing regulatory scrutiny in the sector, as authorities seek to strengthen oversight and improve service reliability for consumers across the country.
