Rwanda’s creative industry has taken a significant step onto the global stage following a strategic partnership between Ikirenga Art and Culture Promotion and the International Youth Media Summit (IYMS).

The agreement signals a new era of opportunity for young Rwandan storytellers, filmmakers, and creatives seeking international exposure and collaboration.

Announced in Kigali, the partnership establishes a long-term framework designed to empower youth through media, storytelling, and cultural exchange.

It also positions Rwanda as an emerging hub for youth-driven creative industries in East Africa.

At the heart of the collaboration is a shared mission: to equip young people with the tools and platforms needed to tell impactful stories while fostering peacebuilding and cross-cultural understanding.

Through this initiative, Rwandan youth will gain access to international training programs, global networks, and opportunities to showcase their work on the world stage.

Under the agreement, Ikirenga ACP will act as the lead implementing partner in Rwanda, coordinating local programs and preparing participants for future global engagements.

Starting in 2027, selected Rwandan youth are expected to attend annual IYMS Summits, where they will collaborate with peers from across the globe on social impact media projects.

“This partnership is a transformative opportunity for Rwanda’s young creatives,” said Pierre Hakizimana, Executive Director of Ikirenga ACP.

“It opens doors for our youth to share their stories internationally and use media as a tool for social change.” he added

The collaboration will focus on several key areas, including youth training workshops, co-production of films, international exchange programs, and joint fundraising initiatives.

Together, these efforts aim to build a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures talent and strengthens Rwanda’s creative economy.

From the global partner’s perspective, the collaboration represents a strategic expansion into Africa.

Evelyn Seubert, President of IYMS, emphasized Rwanda’s potential as a cultural and creative leader.

“Rwanda’s vibrant youth community makes it an ideal foundation for expanding our mission. Together, we are empowering young voices to shape global conversations through storytelling,” she said.

The International Youth Media Summit, headquartered in Los Angeles, has spent over two decades connecting young filmmakers from more than 80 countries.

Its programs have produced over 140 social impact films addressing pressing global challenges, ranging from climate change to human rights.

Looking ahead, the partnership outlines an ambitious roadmap.

Initial activities in 2026 will include workshops, film screenings, and joint funding initiatives.

Long-term plans envision the establishment of an African regional center for IYMS, with Rwanda playing a central role.

There is also growing potential for the country to host future regional or global summits.

A major milestone for the collaboration will take place during the 2026 IYMS Summit in Paris, where the partnership will be officially celebrated at a closing ceremony hosted at UNESCO headquarters.

As Rwanda continues to invest in its cultural and creative sectors, this partnership marks a pivotal moment one that not only amplifies local talent but also strengthens the country’s voice in global cultural dialogue.
