World Leaders gathered at the UN General Assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a 66-page “Pact for the Future” which seeks to bring member states together to fix present and future generations challenges.
“We are confronted by rising catastrophic and existential risks, many caused by the choices we make. Fellow human beings are enduring terrible suffering. If we do not change course, we risk tipping into a future of persistent crisis and breakdown,” the leaders collectively said in the pact.
Leaders also resolved to set on that path, striving for a world that is safe, peaceful, just, equal, inclusive, sustainable and prosperous, a world in which well-being, security and dignity and a healthy planet are assured for all humanity.
Every commitment in this Pact as seen by Taarifa, the leaders say it is fully consistent and aligned with international law, including human rights law.
“We will respect, protect, promote and fulfill all human rights, recognizing their universality, indivisibility, interdependence and interrelatedness, and we will be unequivocal in what we stand for and uphold: freedom from fear and freedom from want for all,” the pact reads in part.
The Pact also notes, “to live up to foundational promise to protect succeeding generations from the scourge of war, member states must abide by international law.
The leaders resolved that African countries including others in special situations need to be supported to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
