American citizens in Uganda have been advised to stay away from crowded places and exercise caution as the country could be a target of terrorist attacks, the US embassy in Kampala said on Saturday.
“The Embassy is aware of unconfirmed reports of increased risk of terrorist attacks in Kampala and enhanced security measures by local authorities,” a statement reads in part.
It adds, “American citizens are encouraged to exercise increased caution in public areas including shopping malls, schools, and areas frequented by tourists.”
“Remain alert and avoid large public gathering places, keep a low profile, and Be aware of your surroundings,” the embassy cautioned American citizens in Uganda.
Last year in October, the ADF terror group attacked and killed two foreign tourists and their guide in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth national park, located in a remote area near the DRC border.
The notorious ADF rebel commander, Abdul Rashid Kyote alias Njovu was later arrested and embarked on a fast tracked court battle. Njovu was responsible for the brutal attack and murder of two foreign tourists and their guide.
The US government has since placed the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) a Ugandan rebel group with its bases in neighbouring DRC.
On the night of 16th June 2023, the ADF crossed into Uganda from DRC and attacked Lhubiriha Secondary School, in Southwestern border town of Mpondwe, Kasese district.
Forty-two (42) people, including 37 students, 4 members of the community, and 1 security guard were killed in the attack, while 6 students were abducted to carry food stolen from the school store.
The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) linked to the notorious Islamic State was established around 1995 by merging rebel groups, including the Uganda Muslim Liberation Army and the National Army for Liberation of Uganda, to overthrow the current government.
