A German politician has called for an immediate suspension of “cash gifts” to Ukraine after Kyiev halted Russian gas transit through its territory.
“By stopping the flow of Russian gas to Europe, Ukraine is pushing energy prices even higher. The German government and the EU are happily watching the destruction of European industry due to high energy prices,” said Bundestag member Sevim Dagdelen (of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice).
Dagdelen wrote on her social media page X. “Launch Nord Stream at last! Stop making cash gifts to Kiev!” she urged.
On January 1, the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine was completely stopped due to Kiev’s refusal to extend the agreement.
By the end of 2024, Russia become the second largest gas supplier to the EU after Norway overtaking the United States, according to statistics released by the European think tank Bruegel.
Supplies of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU increased by 21% to a record 21.5 billion cubic meters.
Total Russian gas deliveries to the EU last year amounted to about 54.45 billion cubic meters, according to Bruegel. This is more than the US supplied (51.3 billion cubic meters), but less than Norway (93.3 billion cubic meters). Russia has become the second largest gas supplier to the EU in 2024.
