The cement gap in Rwanda may begin to fade as a newly unveiled cement factory is expected to add over 1 million tonnes to the thursty market.
President Paul Kagame on Thursday officially launched the AnJia Cement Factory with a total construction cost of U$100million and is expected to produce one million tonnes per year.
“Today, growth prospects for Africa’s cement industry look very promising,” President Kagame said.
“A rapidly growing and urbanizing population, in Africa especially, is creating increased demand for housing and infrastructure. For manufacturers, this means more opportunities to invest in new markets and create jobs in our communities,” He said.
AnJia Cement Factory is a Hong Kong-based building materials manufacturer with subsidiaries in Africa.
“The end goal is to build a more connected Africa, which everyone can benefit from. Transformation takes time. But we are united by a shared vision to close the infrastructure gap and improve standards of living.
Let’s continue building on this mindset,“ said Kagame.
According to details, cement produced by the Anjia Factory in Rwanda will also be supplied to the regional market but almost 79% of the production will be supplied to Rwandan market.
“We will provide high quality and good price of products to contribute to social economic development in Rwanda and across the region ” said Zhang Jimin, the Chairman of Chine West Cement ltd.
Claire Kamanzi, CEO of Rwanda Development Board (RDB) says that Anjia cement, “will complement the other two factories that we have in the country to meet the demands, address the trade balance and reduce our import bills.”
Considering the local pricing of cement in Rwanda, a 50kg bag of cement costs Frw12,000(U$115).
