On Thursday evening, President Paul Kagame welcomed global motorsport leaders, rally champions, and enthusiasts to a cocktail reception at the Kigali Convention Centre, ahead of the FIA Annual Awards Ceremony scheduled for Friday. The event brought together Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), members of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, representatives of automobile clubs and motorsport federations worldwide, and the Rwanda Automobile Club.
A key moment of the evening was the unveiling of the first FIA Level 2 Affordable Cross Car manufactured in Africa. Locally produced by Rwandan polytechnic students in collaboration with FIA and the Rwanda Automobile Club, the car represents a significant milestone in Africa’s contribution to motorsport innovation. President Kagame and Mohammed Ben Sulayem personally revealed the car, emphasizing Rwanda’s growing role in fostering local talent and advancing technological achievements.
The event also honored Rwanda’s art scene, recognizing the top three Rwandan artists who won an art competition celebrating FIA’s 120th anniversary. Their works, inspired by the spirit of motorsport and creativity, reflected Rwanda’s vibrant cultural and artistic heritage.
As Rwanda prepares to host the FIA Annual Awards, the evening underscored the country’s rising influence in the global motorsport community. The unveiling of the locally produced cross car and the celebration of artistic talent highlight Rwanda’s commitment to innovation, education, and the intersection of culture and technology. These milestones set the stage for what promises to be a historic event in Kigali.
