As part of celebrations marking the 120th anniversary of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Rwandan artists were invited to create artworks inspired by this historic milestone. Among the participants, Ishimwe Gad, a talented student from Kigali College, emerged as the winner with his exceptional piece of art.
Ishimwe’s artwork, a vibrant interpretation of motorsport’s energy and legacy, will be permanently housed at the FIA’s iconic headquarters in the Place de la Concorde, Paris, France. This prestigious recognition places his work alongside globally celebrated pieces that commemorate the history and future of motorsport.
The announcement was made during a cocktail reception hosted by President Paul Kagame at the Kigali Convention Centre on Thursday evening. The event welcomed FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, members of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, and motorsport enthusiasts from across the world. The gathering was part of the lead-up to the FIA Annual Awards Ceremony, with President Kagame highlighting the significance of fostering innovation and celebrating young talent in Rwanda.
“This is a dream come true,” Ishimwe said. “To have my work displayed in Paris alongside other renowned artists is an honor, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Rwanda on a global stage.”
In addition to honoring Ishimwe, the evening included the unveiling of the first FIA Level 2 Affordable Cross Car produced in Africa, locally manufactured by Rwandan polytechnic students. President Kagame and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem praised the vehicle as a milestone in African motorsport innovation.
The art competition was one of several initiatives tied to the FIA’s anniversary celebrations, aimed at showcasing the intersection of motorsport and creativity while fostering cultural exchange. Ishimwe’s achievement not only highlights his individual talent but also shines a spotlight on Rwanda’s emerging art scene.
This recognition further cements Rwanda’s growing influence on the global stage, from its innovative contributions to motorsport to the talents of its vibrant creative community. Ishimwe’s artwork will serve as a lasting reminder of Rwanda’s role in the FIA’s milestone celebration and its commitment to nurturing young talent.
