A 22 year old Silverback mountain gorilla has died from the misty Virunga National Park, the Dian Fossey Fund International announced on Friday evening.
“The Fossey Fund is saddened to report that mountain gorilla silverback Giraneza died today, following an illness,” a statement posted on their Facebook page said. “Our trackers are continuing to monitor the two females, each with a 1-year-old infant, that were in his group and are now without a leader,” the statement added.
The surviving family has been separated from Giraneza since last week, when he became ill, and are traveling alone. The nature of the illness was not mentioned, but the Foundation said that, “We will be closely following these mothers and infants, and will post updates here [Facebook] and on our website.”
Giraneza was 22 years old. His name meant “in strut stance.”
