Ranked one of the fastest growing cities in Africa, the city of Kigali has the highest turnover of mayors with Pascal Nyamurinda being the eighth in 23 years.
Nyamurinda, who was elected on Friday, comes at a time when city dwellers are demanding for a leader who will involve them in decision making process following previous controversial policies.
After taking oath, Nyamurinda said, “As a leader I will do whatever it takes to ensure that your [dwellers] views and concerns receive deserved attention as well as addressing the challenges…”
Nyamurinda pledged to bridge the gap between the residents of Kigali and the government of Rwanda and committed to providing quality service delivery.
The Mayor also promised to direct more efforts to infrastructural development to achieve the highest standards expected of a fast growing modern city. He pledged to maintain the city’s cleanliness as well as upgrading roads and schools. He said he will among others attract more investments to the City and develop the private sector.
Meanwhile, Nyamurinda got 165 votes against 35 for Aurore Umuhoza. He became the eighth Mayor of Kigali City since 1994 when the rule of law returned to the country on ending the genocide governments.
Brief Bio
Hethetho to his election Nyamurinda 53, had served the Rwandan government in many ranks. He has served as the Director General of the National Identification Agency (NIDA) since 2012. He also served as Rwanda’s diplomat to the UN in New York along side serving in various security organs.
