Martha Karua the leader of Kenya’s opposition National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) has said that she does and will not recognize William Ruto as the President.
” He (Rut0) is not my President. I reckon he is in office however he got there,” she said during an interview on a local television.
Karua added that she doesn’t believe in the process that gave Ruto the presidency and disagrees with the Supreme Court decision on declaring Ruto as winner of August 9, 2022 presidential election.
” I don’t agree with the court’s decision where it found that three is a majority out of seven. Even without saying so, If four commissioners say they cannot support the presidential declaration and the court trashes them, it legitimising that three can overrule four in a panel,” Karua explained
Four ex-IEBC commissioners had disputed the presidential elections.
The four led by former commissioner Juliana Cherera said they couldn’t take ownership of the results because of the opaque nature they have been handled.
Moreso, the Narc Kenya leader alleged that the process was flawed.
“Chebukati’s decision was forced upon us. Even if it binds us, I dont have to believe in it. That’s all I’m saying,” Karua added.
The former Justice Minister and four-term Gichugu MP was the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential running mate.
If they had formed the government, Raila Odinga had promised to hand her additional responsibilities of being in charge of the Justice and Legal affairs docket.
Ruto scooped 7.1 million votes against Raila’s 6.9 million votes.
However, Raila rejected the results terming them “null and void” and promised to battle it out in the Supreme Court.
Later the court ruled that the petition lacked sufficient evidence.
