Embattled Rigathi Gachagua the Deputy President of Kenya has said he has no plans of resigning from his job and promised to fight on at the Senate and in court.
“I was elected by 7.2 million Kenyans; how dare you suggest I resign without public participation? I have no intention of resigning from this job… I will fight until the end,” Gachagua assured Kenyans.
The Deputy President is scheduled to appear before the National Assembly later today (Tuesday). “I will get justice and continue to carry out my duties as DP. Anybody sending me messages to resign is a joker. I have done nothing wrong to Kenyans,” he said.
Gachagua who is battling 11 accusations including; tribalism, corruption, undermining his boss and violating the constitution said all these are fabricated accusations with the blessing of the President.
Gachagua stated on Monday at a press conference in Nairobi that the motion tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, could not proceed without the president’s approval.
“To the issue that this motion cannot find its way to the National Assembly without the President’s nod, that is true, it can’t. It has the President’s nod,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua is accused of abusing his executive powers to solicit a Sh3.7 billion mosquito net tender favouring his two sons.
He denies the accusation as “ridiculous and baseless.” “Where was the Deputy President involved in a tender? This is a tender that never was. For the record, the suspected officers were exonerated.”
Gachagua is also accused of dubiously purchasing prime land (40 acres) in Kakuret, Kieni Constituency. However, in his defence, clarified that the property was sold to him in 2015 before becoming Deputy President.
Gachagua has described the impeachment as “outrageous and baseless propaganda” designed to tarnish his reputation and remove him from office.
President William Ruto has avoided pronouncing himself on the impeachment of his deputy.
