A Kenyan police officer lost both forearms after a tear gas canister he was attempting to throw malfunctioned and exploded prematurely during a peaceful protest in Nairobi on Tuesday.
The anti-Finance Bill protest, organized to oppose recent government policies and demand greater accountability, had drawn large crowds of demonstrators carrying signs and chanting slogans.
The officer was quickly transported to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Despite medical efforts, both of his forearms were too badly damaged to be saved.

The Kenyan government has been condemned for the incident and the public called for a thorough investigation.
The Kenyan National Police Service (NPS) has launched an internal investigation to determine the cause of the malfunction and review safety protocols.
Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai expressed his condolences and emphasized the importance of safety for all during protests.
Protest leaders called for calm and urged the government to address the concerns of the people. “Our movement is about seeking justice and better governance through non-violent means. We urge all participants to remain peaceful and for the police to respect our right to protest,” said John Mwangi, one of the organizers.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between Kenyan citizens and law enforcement during demonstrations, underscoring the need for better training and non-lethal crowd control methods.
