General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo the head of Sudan’s battle hardened Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Wednesday flew to Uganda’s capital Kampala to hold talks with President Yoweri Museveni.
This is the first known wartime foreign trip by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo who is giving sleepless nights to rival General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan leader of the Sudanese army.
The lusive Dagalo said via Platform X the two discussed developments in Sudan, as well as his vision for negotiations to end the war.
Museveni confirmed the meeting in a post on X, saying he welcomed Dagalo to his country home Rwakitura.
“The RSF has conflicted with the Sudanese army since April due to a power struggle between their leaders,” President Museveni said via X.
The RSF has been gaining momentum, taking over Wad Madani, a city in the centre of the country earlier this month.
Sudan’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that Dagalo was not able to travel to Djibouti, the current chair of regional body IGAD for a planned initial meeting with Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The meeting, which was meant to help find an end to the war, is to be rescheduled to an unspecified date in January due to “technical issues,” the statement said.
A source familiar with the matter said the meeting was postponed because of disagreements between the two, without giving further details.
Rapid Support Forces
The RSF are paramilitary forces formerly operated by the Government of Sudan. It grew out of, and is primarily composed of, the Janjaweed militias which fought on behalf of the Sudanese government during the War in Darfur.
RSF is administered by the National Intelligence and Security Service, while during military operations is commanded by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
