It was reported on 12th May 2024 that at about 10:30 hours EST, internet service experience in the East African hinterland was degraded, affecting over 80 million users.
Internet services became either slow or intermittent in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan as many Internet
Service providers reported difficulties.
Most ISPs in the region, especially telecoms, depend on the upstream bulk sea cable haulers of internet traffic to the region.
These cable services, among others, include EASSY and SEACOM that are relied upon to connect millions to the global internet traffic.
It was not immediately established what
caused the cut. Many have reported that providers are working to restore the services.
The other reported impact is the Google Cache services. This service allows internet users to get localised search results every time they search the internet.
Other capacity challenges have been reported in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
This is a developing story that we shall keep updating.
