Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and MTN Rwanda have completed a major expansion and modernization of MTN’s network in Kigali, a move that will extend coverage, improve user experiences, and prepare the network for 5G. This initiative will boost connectivity, especially in underserved areas, enhancing access to education, healthcare, and social connections while supporting Rwanda’s socio-economic and environmental goals.
Mapula Bodibe, MTN Rwanda’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the impact on Rwandans, stating, “Our commitment to ensuring that every Rwandan experiences the benefits of a modern, connected life is at the core of this partnership with Ericsson. With Kigali’s network now fully modernized, we’re making bold strides toward a sustainable, digital future for Rwanda, ultimately contributing to Rwanda’s economic and social development.”
As part of the modernization, MTN Rwanda introduced energy-efficient multi-band and multi-sector radios from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio, optimizing site footprint, reducing energy consumption, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
Eugen Gakwerere, Acting Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at MTN Rwanda, explained, “The modernization project brings important improvements, expanding coverage to underserved areas, increasing network capacity to support more users without congestion, and providing faster data speeds for a smoother digital experience. Additionally, energy-efficient technologies have been integrated to reduce environmental impact, aligning with MTN’s ‘Road to Zero’ commitment for a sustainable future in Rwanda.”
Hossam Kandeel, Vice President at Ericsson, highlighted the significance of the partnership in driving digital inclusion across Rwanda, stating, “Ericsson is committed to supporting MTN Rwanda in connecting the lives of Rwandans. This modernization will enhance user experiences and expand connectivity in line with our #AfricaInMotion vision to empower a sustainable and connected Africa.”
