Army Week Kicks Off As Army Chief Blesses The Exercise

The Rwanda Defence Force began yesterday the annual nationwide week dubbed “Army Week” with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Patrick Nyanvumba participating in ploughing and sawing seeds on a 17-hectare marshland.

Infrastructure Minister James Musoni alongside other government officials joined the residents of Kicukiro District to prepare the Umushumba mwiza marshland where farmers will grow vegetables.

Other activities expected to proceed during the Army Week period include construction and repair of bridges and sewers as well as providing free medical service by military medics.

Gen. Nyamvumba said the Army week is a symbol of a continued liberation. “As it is often repeated, true liberation means good life conditions,” he told the residents. He added that the army will continue playing a role in order to develop the country. “It is something we have been striving to achieve,” he said.

At the event, the army dug pits and tunnels to restrain rainwater flooding the marshland and destroy crops. Later, the service men joined farmers to plant vegetables such as carrots, beetroots and green beans.

Meanwhile, at Masaka hospital, military medics treated dozens of patients with chronic diseases, eye infections, women ailments, respiratory and tooth infections for free.

It is expected that this year’s Army Week will last for four months and reach out to the whole country. During this time, RDF will contribute in different areas of expertise; engineering, medical, agriculture and environment.

Specialised medics plan to treat 250 pacients and ophthalmologists to conduct 750 surgeries.

Meanwhile 18 bridges and one feeder road will be constructed.

While armies on many part of the world are busy shelling each other destroying economies and causing misery, the military in Rwanda is busy growing food, treating the sick and safeguarding the environment.
