Airtel Money has introduced an upgrade to mobile money services in Rwanda, making cross-network transfers seamless while rewarding users with free bundles for transactions above RWF 1,000. The new system eliminates prior opt-ins and complex steps, providing a straightforward process.
As part of the WAMENYE WAGUAN?! campaign, Airtel aims to promote the ease of sending money across all networks. Customers simply dial 1821*2#, enter the recipient’s mobile number, input the amount, confirm with their PIN, and send. The service is also accessible via the My Airtel App.
Jean Claude Gaga, Managing Director of Airtel Money, emphasized the streamlined approach. “The biggest pain point for users was the unnecessary steps for accepting terms and conditions. We worked with our partners to simplify the process, which boosted transaction value by 21% within a month. Starting today, every transfer will earn customers a data or voice bundle—no strings attached,” he said.
The upgrade is supported by RSwitch, Rwanda’s National Payment Switch, which ensures secure interoperability across telecoms, banks, and financial institutions. Blaise Pascal Gasabira, CEO of RSwitch, noted that this collaboration advances financial inclusion by making digital transactions accessible and efficient for all Rwandans.
Airtel Money’s enhancements promise effortless transactions and rewards for users, reinforcing its commitment to a more inclusive and efficient digital economy in Rwanda.
