AU’s Defence, Safety, Security Specialized Technical Committee Convenes in Burundi

Burundi is currently hosting dozens of officials from the African Union’s Specialized Technical Committee on Defence, Safety and Security (STCDSS) in Bujumbura city.

Brig. Gen. Gaspard Baratuza, the spokesperson for Burundi’s Ministry of National Defense and War Veterans, said the meeting will focus on assessing the political and security situation in Africa and strengthening conflict prevention mechanisms.

Taarifa Investigative Desk has been informed that the 4-day session (15-18th) will be held at three levels.

Today, commences the meeting of Experts of the 18th Ordinary Session of the STCDSS.

On 17 September 2026 will be the 21st Ordinary Meeting of the African Chiefs of Defen21st Ordinary Meeting of the African Chiefs of Defence Staff and Heads of Safety and Security Services (ACDS).

The final Day September will be the 18th Ordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Defence, Safety and Security (STCDSS) at Ministerial level.

According to organisers 43 member states of the African Union, as well as representatives from Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms such as the EASF, ECCAS, and SADC, will participate.

Meanwhile, Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye serves as the Chairperson of the African Union for 2026 since February.
