Rwanda’s food and drug regulator has shut down multiple alcoholic beverage manufacturing facilities and ordered an immediate nationwide recall of their products, citing public health concerns following regulatory inspections.

The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) announced today that it has revoked manufacturing licenses for all facilities listed in an attached Annex I.

All products originating from those sites must be withdrawn from the market.

“Following regulatory inspections and compliance assessments,” the agency stated, it is instructing manufacturers to initiate a full recall, while distributors and retailers must immediately halt sales and return remaining stock.

The authority gave manufacturers three working days to submit recall reports and warned that non-compliance would result in “measures under applicable regulatory provisions.” It also called on consumers to stop using the affected products right away.

The action was taken under Law No. 003/2018, which established the Rwanda FDA’s powers. A note in the announcement indicated that further facilities could be targeted as enforcement continues.

This is the first such broad enforcement action detailed in the authority’s public notice. The specific companies and brands involved were not named in the main body of the announcement but are understood to be listed in the annex.
