RwandAir has entered into a strategic partnership with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to expand the Nigeria–East and Southern Africa Air Cargo Corridor, a move expected to strengthen regional trade, improve market access for exporters, and accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The collaboration marks a significant milestone in Africa’s drive to enhance intra-continental commerce by creating more efficient cargo links between West, East, and Southern Africa.
Under the initiative, Nigerian exporters will gain direct access to Kigali, Lusaka, and Harare, while also benefiting from seamless connections to Nairobi and Johannesburg through RwandAir’s expanding cargo network.
The enhanced corridor is expected to facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, pharmaceuticals, manufactured goods, textiles, and other high-value exports, reducing transit times and logistics costs while improving the competitiveness of African businesses in regional markets.
For Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, the partnership offers new opportunities for exporters to diversify their markets beyond West Africa.
For Rwanda, it reinforces the country’s growing position as a regional logistics and aviation hub, leveraging Kigali’s strategic location and modern cargo infrastructure to connect businesses across the continent.
The initiative also supports the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to create a single African market by reducing trade barriers, improving connectivity, and increasing intra-African trade.
Although Africa accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world’s population, trade among African countries remains significantly lower than in other regions, making improved transport and logistics networks essential to unlocking the continent’s economic potential.
RwandAir has continued to expand its cargo operations as part of its broader strategy to support African trade and supply chains.
The airline’s cargo services play a critical role in transporting time-sensitive and high-value goods, connecting businesses to regional and international markets while supporting economic growth.
The Nigeria–East and Southern Africa Air Cargo Corridor is expected to deepen commercial ties between participating countries, create new opportunities for exporters and manufacturers, and strengthen regional value chains.
By improving air freight connectivity across key African economic centers, the partnership represents another step toward a more integrated, competitive, and resilient continental economy under the AfCFTA framework.
