Maj. General Sylvain Ekenge has been returned to the spokesperson docket for the Congolese military FARDC.
Rwanda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe said in reaction to the return of Gen. Ekenge is troubling and indecent for more than one reason.
Nduhungirehe observed that although, the general had been “suspended” from his duties as spokesperson for the Congolese army, he was never prosecuted by the justice system.
“Nine months after his misdeed, the senior FARDC officer has just been reinstated, through the back door, in his functions,” Rwanda’s Chief diplomat said.
In his hate speech directed against Congolese Tutsi, Gen. Ekenge had previously warned his Congolese compatriots that “when you marry a Tutsi woman today, you need to be careful,” claiming that they bring Tutsi men to live in the marital home, presenting them as cousins or nephews, so that they can serve as the biological fathers of their children, in order to preserve their “race.”
Nduhungirehe says of the Generals return, “this is a confirmation, if any were still needed, that the hate speech against Congolese Tutsis and the ideology of genocide in the DRC are not the work of black sheep in the army or renegades in the government, but rather a political project fully embraced by the State.”
