New Karenge Water Plant is destined to Boost water supply with an extra 36,000 Cubic Metres

The expansion of the Karenge water treatment facility in Rwamagana District has reached 60.9% completion, with the new plant expected to significantly increase the volume of clean water available to communities in the Eastern Province and Kigali.

State Minister Armand Zingiro visited the project as part of a working tour of the Eastern Province, where he is assessing the progress of infrastructure projects being implemented across the region.

The new Karenge plant is being constructed alongside rehabilitation works at the existing facility.

Once completed, it will have the capacity to treat 36,000 cubic metres of water per day, compared with 12,000 cubic metres currently treated by the existing plant.

This means Karenge’s total treatment capacity is expected to rise to 48,000 cubic metres per day, representing a fourfold increase in capacity compared with the existing facility alone.

The project is expected to strengthen water supply across different parts of Rwamagana and contribute to meeting demand in Kigali, as the two areas continue to experience growing demand for reliable water services.

Speaking during the inspection, Zingiro emphasized the importance of ensuring that major infrastructure projects progress according to plan and deliver the intended services to communities.

“This project is important because it will increase the volume of clean water available to the population and help us respond to the growing demand for water in Rwamagana and Kigali,” Zingiro said.

The expansion is part of broader efforts to increase water production capacity and extend access to safe drinking water, particularly in rapidly developing communities.

At 60.9 percent completion, the project has passed the halfway mark, with the additional 36,000 cubic metres per day expected to become available once the new treatment facility is completed and operational.
