Rwanda has joined other countries across the globe to observe the annual World Cleanup Day aimed at tackling waste crisis and promoting environmental sustainability.
World Cleanup Day is annually Observed on September 20th.
However, Rwanda has a national clean up day every last Saturday of the month populary known as Umuganda. Uganda has also adopted the same national cleanup Day.
“From Clean Plates to Clean Cities,” is the theme of this year’s World Cleanup Day which is focusing heavily on food waste reduction and sustainable urban resource management.
The goal is to raise awareness of the triple planetary crisis (pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change) while fostering long-term recycling habits and systemic circular economy shifts.
“This World Cleanup Day is a reminder that cleaner spaces begin with everyday choices,” said Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
The wildlife agency urged Kenyans to take greater responsibility for the waste they generate, warning that litter and plastics can pollute habitats, block waterways and eventually make their way into the oceans.
“How people dispose of rubbish at home, workplaces and public spaces, play a major role in keeping communities and natural ecosystems clean,” KWS said.
