At a supermarket checkout, James Mugabo reaches for his Equity Visa Infinite debit card. He does not count banknotes or wait for change.
He holds the card briefly over the payment terminal, hears the confirmation tone and continues with his day.
It is an ordinary moment, but it says something about how banking is changing. A card is no longer useful only for withdrawing cash. When linked directly to an account, it can serve as a practical wallet, allowing its holder to pay without carrying large amounts of money.
“What impressed me was not simply owning a premium card, but discovering how many everyday and travel needs it could handle,” Mugabo says. “I can pay locally, shop online, travel and access my money without carrying large amounts of cash.”
The Equity Visa Infinite debit card is not the only premium card on the market. What makes it distinctive is the long list of services and benefits brought together on one card. It combines everyday payments, international access, contactless technology, automatic currency conversion and premium travel privileges.
Those benefits become more personal when a journey is long and tiring.
Phionah Kabayija, who also uses the Equity Visa Infinite debit card, is a frequent traveller. She knows the strain of spending several hours between flights. There may be nowhere comfortable to sit, a telephone that needs charging and work that cannot wait until arrival.
“People usually see the destination, but they do not see the exhaustion between flights,” Kabayija says. “Having a quiet place to sit, recharge, work or simply breathe can completely change the journey.”
Equity Bank Rwanda advertises access to more than 1,200 airport lounges, travel insurance, 24-hour concierge services, global assistance and lifestyle offers for eligible Visa Infinite cardholders. The bank has also promoted lounge access for a cardholder and one guest.
These are practical benefits. A lounge can offer a calmer place to rest, eat or work before boarding. Travel insurance may provide support when an eligible journey is disrupted, while concierge and global assistance services can help when travel plans change or a card is lost abroad. Access, insurance coverage and guest privileges remain subject to the applicable terms, which customers should confirm before travelling.
Away from the airport, the card returns to everyday duties. It can be used at participating shops, on supported websites and at Visa-enabled ATMs. Automatic currency conversion also allows customers to pay for hotels, flights and other purchases abroad without first obtaining every destination’s currency. Applicable exchange rates and charges may apply.
The technology behind the card is designed to make these transactions quick and secure. Its EMV chip generates transaction-specific security information, helping to reduce the risk of counterfeit-card fraud. The contactless feature uses Near Field Communication, or NFC, to communicate with a compatible payment terminal over a very short distance.
Visa says every contactless transaction carries a one-time security code. A PIN or further verification may still be required, depending on the value and nature of the transaction.
For an entrepreneur, the card can pay for business travel, website services, software subscriptions or digital advertising where accepted. For a parent, it can purchase an urgent ticket online. For a traveller, it provides access to money abroad and, where the conditions are met, useful assistance when a journey does not go according to plan.
“We wanted one card that follows our customers through their whole day, from a supermarket till in Kigali to a departure lounge overseas,” says Antoine Iyamuremye, Head of Marketing and Communications at Equity Bank Rwanda.
“With access to over 1,200 airport lounges through the Visa Airport Companion App, and the option to bring a guest along each time, plus travel insurance and 24/7 concierge and global assistance, it just works, wherever life takes you. That’s what ‘reliable companion’ means to us.”
“Infinite” does not mean unlimited spending. It remains a debit card, so payments are drawn from the linked account and are subject to available funds and the bank’s transaction limits.
For existing Equity Bank customers, obtaining the card is straightforward. If you already have an account, you can simply apply for the Equity Visa Infinite debit card and have it issued instantly.
Its real value is therefore not simply its premium appearance.
It is the ability to serve as an everyday wallet and a travel companion, moving naturally from a quick payment in Kigali to a quieter and more comfortable wait at an airport thousands of kilometres away.
