Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has inaugurated the long-delayed Megech Irrigation Dam near Gondar, calling it a “major milestone” for the historic city and surrounding communities.
“Though delayed for years, we resolved execution challenges through the Medemer philosophy to realize this vital project,” Abiy said, referring to the government’s approach of cooperation.
He credited rigorous monitoring with helping resolve problems that had held up construction.
The dam is designed to store 185 million cubic metres of water and irrigate more than 17,000 hectares, Abiy said.
Earlier project figures reported by the Ethiopian News Agency estimate that about 45,000 farming households could benefit, with irrigation enabling farmers to grow crops up to three times a year.
Reliable water could help reduce farmers’ dependence on seasonal rainfall and support more regular production.
