Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva has assured the public that the government is taking urgent measures to address the water shortages affecting many parts of the country during the ongoing dry season.
Speaking on the issue, Dr. Nsengiyumva acknowledged that the shortage of water has become a growing concern for many households and institutions, particularly as prolonged dry weather continues to strain the country’s water supply systems.
“The government is concerned by the current water shortages and is implementing several measures to improve access to clean water. These include expanding the capacity of the Nzove III Water Treatment Plant, improving water distribution systems, and encouraging citizens to use water responsibly,” the Prime Minister said.
The government is implementing a series of interventions aimed at easing the crisis. One of the key projects involves expanding the production capacity of the Nzove III Water Treatment Plant to increase the volume of treated water supplied to Kigali and surrounding areas.
Authorities are also working to improve the efficiency of water distribution networks to ensure that available water reaches communities more reliably while reducing losses caused by leaks and aging infrastructure.
In addition, the government is calling on residents to use water wisely by avoiding unnecessary waste, especially during the dry season when demand is significantly higher than supply.

Water shortages have become more frequent during extended dry spells as rising urban populations and increasing demand continue to put pressure on existing infrastructure.
The government has invested heavily in expanding water production and distribution over the years, with several new projects underway to improve long-term access to safe and reliable water services across the country.
Officials say the ongoing investments are expected to strengthen water security and reduce the impact of seasonal shortages in the years ahead.
