Rwanda is set to receive its first shipment of 40,000 tonnes of refined petroleum products, including gasoline and diesel, through the Port of Tanga in Tanzania by the end of July 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s fuel supply and ensuring more stable prices.

According to Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, the shipments are part of a partnership with oil-producing and refining countries.

The arrangement will see a vessel carrying refined petroleum products arrive at the Port of Tanga every month before the fuel is transported to Rwanda.

“The initiative is being implemented in partnership with countries that produce and refine petroleum. It will help Rwanda secure lower and more stable fuel prices over the long term,” Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva said.

The government expects the new supply arrangement to improve the reliability of fuel imports, reduce exposure to market fluctuations, and enhance the country’s energy security.

Officials say the monthly shipments will play a key role in supporting Rwanda’s growing demand for petroleum products while contributing to greater price stability for consumers and businesses.
