First Ebola Suspect in India Tests Negative

India has calmed down after it’s first Ebola Suspect finally tested negative.

India’s health ministry said on Wednesday, after a traveler who recently arrived in the country from Uganda developed symptoms and was isolated.

The 28-year-old woman was kept in isolation in the southern city of Bengaluru after she reported mild symptoms of body aches following her arrival from the African nation this month.

The tests had been conducted as a precautionary measure, according to India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

“The National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, has communicated orally that the woman’s blood report has come back negative. As per protocol, a repeat test should be conducted after 48 hours of observation. However, since the the woman has not developed any additional symptoms so far, we are yet to take a decision on the retest. We are waiitng for a call from highter authorities,” said Anil Kumar Banagar, Bengaluru District Surgeon and Medical Superintendent of the State-run hospital.

Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, said, “Test results have returned negative for Ebola virus disease,” the health ministry said in a statement on the Bengaluru case, which, if confirmed, would have been the South Asian nation’s first since 2014.

India has launched screening and surveillance measures at ⁠airports and other entry points, issued advisories on precautions, and urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan.

The India-Africa Forum Summit scheduled this ⁠week in the capital, New Delhi, was postponed over the public health concerns in Africa.
