President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Botswana’s President Duma Boko met at the State House in Gaborone this afternoon, holding high-level discussions that culminated in the signing of several bilateral agreements and Memorandums of Understanding between the two nations.
The two heads of state first held a one-on-one tête-à-tête before convening broader bilateral talks with their respective delegations, signaling the importance both governments place on deepening the relationship between the two southern and eastern African nations.
The agreements signed cover a wide range of areas central to economic integration and people-to-people ties. Among the key deals concluded were accords on the avoidance of double taxation, designed to encourage greater cross-border investment by eliminating the burden of dual tax obligations on businesses and individuals operating in both countries.
A visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic, official, and national passports was also signed, easing travel between the two countries for government officials and citizens alike.
The two nations further formalized cooperation in air services, paving the way for improved connectivity across their respective capitals.
Additional agreements were reached in the areas of health, economic, trade, and investment cooperation, broadening the scope of the partnership beyond commerce.
In a move aimed at operationalizing the economic agenda, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) signed a dedicated cooperation framework to align their investment promotion efforts.
The flurry of agreements marks a significant step in Rwanda-Botswana relations, reflecting a shared commitment to regional integration and economic development on the African continent.
