President Paul Kagame has emphasized the importance of addressing global challenges through cooperation while acknowledging the existing differences, particularly between nations in the South and the North.
President Kagame, known for his pragmatic approach to global issues, stated that, “I am an optimist as well as a realist so I see things for what they are. There are problems, and they can be addressed. The underlying importance lies in cooperation, and people can still cooperate.”
He highlighted the ongoing debates surrounding these issues, indicating that the persistence of such discussions over time underscores the continuing nature of the problems at hand.
“The North-South Schism is a complex issue that requires global collaboration. If such a debate has been there for a long time, it also means the problem is continuing. But we can really address all these matters through cooperation and also looking at the root cause of whatever problem we are talking about,” President Kagame added during the WEF panel discussion.
The panel, which delved into the North-South Schism, included a diverse array of world leaders and influential figures. Joining President Kagame were President Gustavo Petro of Colombia, who remarked, “Understanding the differences within nations is crucial.
Sharing experiences and perspectives can pave the way for effective cooperation.”
Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands contributed saying that, “Navigating the complexities of global relations requires a commitment to dialogue and understanding. Cooperation is not only beneficial but also necessary to address the challenges we face.”
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), stressed the interconnectedness of economies, stating, “In the realm of international trade, collaboration is not just an option; it’s a necessity. We must work together to ensure mutual benefit and sustainable growth.”
Philanthropist Bill Gates shared his views on the role of technology and innovation, asserting, “Cross-sectoral collaboration is key to addressing complex issues such as health, education, and poverty. By working together, we can leverage the power of innovation to make a meaningful impact.”
Martin Wolf, Associate Editor at the Financial Times and the moderator of the discussion, skillfully guided the conversation.
“As the world grapples with ongoing challenges, the WEF panel discussion serves as a platform for world leaders to discuss strategies for fostering cooperation, understanding differences, and addressing the root causes of global issues,” Wolf said.
The exchange of ideas and perspectives among the diverse panel members reflected a commitment to finding solutions that transcend geopolitical boundaries.
The WEF discussion highlighted the importance of global collaboration in navigating the complexities of the North-South Schism and addressing the root causes of persistent global challenges.
