Emerging reports indicate the Robert Kyagulanyi the leader of Uganda’s largest opposition political party has been shot in the leg.
The leader of National Unity Platform was reportedly shot on Tuesday in Wakiso district outside the capital Kampala as reported by a local television station NBS.
The country’s Police has not made an official statement on the incident.
“Our President Bobiwine has been shot in the leg by police in Bulindo! He’s been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention. We’ll keep the country updated on his situation,” said the Admin of Bobiwines personal handle on X platform.
“Security operatives have made an attempt on the life of Bobiwine. He was shot in the leg and seriously injured in Bulindo, Wakiso District,” the NUP party said via its handle on X Platform.
“The president of the National Unity Platform (NUP)Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has been injured in a scuffle after police fired tear gas to disperse his fans in Kira. He has been rushed to the hospital,” NTV television also reported.
It is not yet clear whether the politician was shot with a bullet of just injured by a canister.
Bobi Wine considered a tentacle of external forces, accused of meddling in the internal matters of Uganda which has experienced uninterupted calm under President Yoweri Museveni who rose to power in 1986 after a protracted guerilla war that ousted socialist regime of Milton Obote.
“The Bazungu. I don’t want to be racist, but they are the ones who are mostly involved” in meddling, Museveni said, adding “Foreign meddling will not be tolerated,” Museveni said in January 2021 after winning the tight election.
Museveni won the 2021 election with 58% of the vote while Wine had 34%, according to official results.
