Tourist Submarine Sinks Off Coast of Egypt, Six Dead

Six tourists have reportedly died, nine others injured and 29 others rescued after a submarine sunk off the Coast of Egypt on Thursday.

The incidence happened at the coast of Hurghada, a Red Sea resort town popular with British tourists.

A total of 45 tourists including children, were onboard the submarine named Sindbad. The group had paid for a trip to the coral reefs in Hurghada.

“The fate of several tourists is being clarified,” according to a statement from Russian embassy in Cairo which confirmed that four of the victims were Russian nationals.

“On March 27, at about 10:00, the Sindbad bathyscaphe, owned by the hotel of the same name, crashed 1km off the shore…In addition to the crew, there were 45 tourists on board, including minors,” Russian embassy in Cairo said.

It said that “most of those on board were rescued and taken to their hotels and hospitals in Hurghada”, adding that their health “is not a concern”.

In November, Sea Story, a tourist vessel, sank off the coast of Hurghada, killing 11 people including a British couple. Around 35 people were rescued.

Egyptian authorities claimed that a large wave was responsible for the disaster, but survivors complained of safety problems on board.
