Rees Kinyangi Lulu, CEO of Sonarwa General Insurance, and Aisha Uwamahoro, Nobilis Hotel Apartment’s accountant, were detained on October 2 over allegations of embezzling approximately Rwf117 million.
The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) confirmed that the funds, which were linked to Nobilis Hotel—a subsidiary of Sonarwa—remain unaccounted for.
According to RIB officials, the dossier has already been submitted to the prosecution, although investigations are still ongoing. The case, which involves the mismanagement of public funds, has drawn attention due to Sonarwa’s 79.21% ownership by the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB), which manages pension contributions.
Nobilis Hotel, once a key asset of Sonarwa, has been struggling financially and is in a state of disrepair. With significant losses incurred, the government, through RSSB, is actively seeking new management or a buyer to restore the hotel’s operations.
Kinyangi and Uwamahoro face charges related to the misappropriation of the missing funds, which are critical to the future of both Sonarwa and Nobilis. The outcome of the case is highly anticipated as it involves public funds, including pensioners’ contributions.
The government’s efforts to address the financial mismanagement at Nobilis Hotel are ongoing, and more developments are expected as investigations proceed.
Court hearing is pending.
