Rwandans will go to polls in July and the campaign fever is beginning to spike.
Social Democratic Party and Liberal Party the leading opposition political parties in the country have both held their congress gatherings and unanimously chosen Paul Kagame as their preferred candidate in the forthcoming Presidential elections.
In the 2017 Presidential elections, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) harvested a total of 13% of the vote while the Liberal Party (PL) grabbed 9.4% of the vote. The Rwanda Patriotic Front Party pooled the lions share of the vote at 76%.
Liberal Party (PL) said it has decided to endorse Paul Kagame as their preferred candidate in the March 24 Congress because he has exceptionally performed.
Meanwhile, on March 9, the ruling Rwanda Patriotic Front party held its extraordinary congress at the party headquarters other political organizations also attended.
The RPF congress elected party flagbearers in the presidential and Parliamentary elections slated for July this year and also presented the party achievements over the past seven years.
“I have accepted to carry the burden you have given me to carry. But I have also told you, and I want to repeat it again, I want somebody to relieve me of this responsibility,” said RPF party Chairman Kagame.
“Please don’t sit and wait for me to give you someone. You must come up with that person yourself. This is what i asked in 2010 and again in 2017. The only reason I reluctantly accept to continue with this responsibility is the specific context of our country,” Kagame said.
Kagame told the party congress; “Ours is a unique situation. Our uniqueness is based on our history, and the level of our development. That is also what we base on when we are in a meeting like this, to exercise our democracy as one of the pillars of the RPF, by choosing our leaders at different levels.”
