Ambassador Ernest Rwamucyo has been elected as the President of the UNICEF Board, marking a significant honor for Rwanda on the global stage.
The election, held yesterday morning, underscores the trust and confidence bestowed upon Ambassador Rwamucyo by the esteemed members of the UNICEF Board.
Rwanda expresses deep gratitude for this recognition and eagerly looks forward to many collaborative efforts including on the “For Every Child” campaign.
The appointment reflects not only on Ambassador Rwamucyo’s capabilities but also on Rwanda’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to the well-being of children worldwide.
Ambassador Rwamucyo, currently serving as the Permanent Representative of Rwanda to the United Nations, has a rich and diverse background in diplomatic service.
Before assuming his current position, Ambassador Rwamucyo served as Rwanda’s Ambassador to Japan, with concurrent accreditation to Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
His diplomatic journey includes notable roles, such as being Rwanda’s High Commissioner to India, with concurrent accreditation to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, from 2013 to 2020.
Additionally, from 2010 to 2013, he served as Rwanda’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and its non-resident Ambassador to Ireland.
Ambassador Rwamucyo’s commitment to international development is evident in his past roles, including positions at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York.
He held the role of Policy Adviser, Millennium Development Goals, from 2007 to 2010, and Director of Strategic Planning and Poverty Reduction Monitoring at the Ministry of Finance from 2004 to 2006.
His extensive experience also extends to his service as Director General for Economic Development Planning at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning of Rwanda from 2006 to 2007.
He has played pivotal roles in economic planning, both at the national and international levels, showcasing his dedication to advancing sustainable development goals.
A highly accomplished individual, Ambassador Rwamucyo holds a master’s in international development from Cornell University in New York, United States, earned in 2001.
He also received his bachelor’s in public administration from the National University of Rwanda in 1999.
