Rwanda has reaffirmed the country’s position on the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) following a high-level meeting in Doha between President Paul Kagame, President Félix Tshisekedi, and His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar.
The discussions centered on the ongoing EAC-SADC peace process, with Rwanda reiterating its support for the initiative while emphasizing the urgent need to address the security threat posed by the FDLR, a genocidal militia operating in eastern DRC. According to Rwanda, ensuring security guarantees for the country and the broader region is a prerequisite for sustainable peace.
A key point raised by Rwanda was the necessity of direct political dialogue with AFC/M23 as part of a comprehensive solution to the crisis. The State House statement underscored that resolving the root causes of the conflict requires acknowledging the political grievances that fuel instability, rather than relying solely on military interventions.
President Kagame stressed that with genuine cooperation from all parties, progress could be achieved more rapidly. He also expressed gratitude to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his continued support in fostering constructive dialogue and working toward practical solutions for long-term peace in the DRC and the Great Lakes region.
Rwanda’s position highlights the need for a multifaceted approach to peace—one that includes political engagement, security assurances, and regional collaboration to address the complex dynamics driving the conflict.
