Rwanda has made history by becoming the first African country to sign the “United Against Online Abuse” (UAOA) Charter, a global initiative spearheaded by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to combat online abuse and hate speech in sports. The landmark signing ceremony took place during the 2024 FIA General Assemblies held in Kigali.
The UAOA campaign emphasizes the need for collective action among governments, technology platforms, and sports organizations to create safer digital spaces for athletes, fans, and stakeholders. Rwanda’s commitment to the initiative underscores its dedication to fostering inclusivity and accountability in the digital age.
Speaking at the ceremony, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem commended Rwanda’s leadership and its growing prominence in the motorsport world. “To be here in Rwanda for such an important moment in the FIA’s calendar is a testament to the strength of this nation, in particular its growing influence in motorsport. We are aligned on our values and shared goals across key sectors such as innovation, sustainability, and road safety, and I look forward to our continued partnership. The future of motorsport in Africa, and in Rwanda, is bright.”
Rwanda’s Minister of Sports, Richard Nyirishema, highlighted the alignment of the campaign with Rwanda’s national values. “This step aligns with Rwanda’s values of inclusivity and accountability. We are proud to join the ‘United Against Online Abuse’ campaign and contribute to fostering a safer digital environment in sports,” he said.
As the first African nation to adopt the UAOA Charter, Rwanda is setting an example for the continent in addressing the growing issue of online abuse in sports. By joining this global campaign, the country reaffirms its commitment to protecting athletes, fans, and all stakeholders from the harm caused by digital hate speech and abuse.
The signing of the UAOA Charter further cements Rwanda’s position as a leader in innovation and forward-thinking governance, while also reflecting the nation’s dedication to creating an inclusive and accountable digital space for all.
